Tris, The Saharawis and Sandblast Arts.
2007-10-29 byThere are three stories in one. It starts with the band Tiris who come from the Saharawi refugee camps in South West Algeria.
Their first public performance was at the prestigous festival in the desert that takes place in Timbuktu, Mali every year. The festival organiser described them as sensational. They were booked to appear at this year’s Whitby Musicport festival.
Their debut album Sandtracks has just been released in Europe by the arts charity Sandblast and thats the second thread.
But we cannot appreciate the aspirations of Tiris, their music or the aims of Sandblast without first understanding the history of the Saharawi people.
This piece explores all three.
On the eve of the release of their debut cd, GondwanaSound
was priviledged to meet up with the women singers from Tiris,
Sheuta Said, Boubba Han, Embarca Zuyu and Swelma Did along with their defacto manager and founder of Sandblast, Danielle Smith.
To get this far with their music, it has been a long journey for them all, but still a journey that as yet, has no finishing post for the Saharawis.
