As the Trustees of two long standing Day Centres for elderly care are forced to close due to financial stringency , Penwith Radio attends an important Cornwall Council meeting on Feb 16th. This meeting set the budget for the forthcoming year. The Council website states,”Day care for older people, and people with a physical disability, mental health problem, or learning disability, is available in a wide variety of centres throughout Cornwall.” Penwith Radio talks with some of the representatives about the reality and of those concerned about the effect of the closure of Day Centres, the possible efects on both social care and the community, of cutting the budget on vulnerable old people.
Young US singer/songwriter Lauren Pritchard came into Penwith Radio to perform live in the studio and tell Kevin Godden all about her fascinating journey from Jackson, Tennessee to London via Los Angeles and Broadway.
Gareth Edwards RWA has been deeply influenced by Art History. Here he talks about the inspiration of this, and his feeling for poetry, on his recent work which depict flower paintings. He discusses his collaborative work with the supervisor of Cornwall’s Library Art Collection, Liz Le Grice, in a talk delivered at the Newlyn Exchange. He also discloses aspects of his technique, his feelings and the influences,which drive his recent work, presently displayed in the exhibition, “Double Vision”.
In this talk Simon Reed, introduces his new book “The Cornish Traditional Year” and mentions the Padstow Obby Oss which is a custom that dates back to 1500 and involves a red Oss, a blue temperance Oss and a Children’s Oss. He talks about the Helston Furry Dance and the tune,”John the Bow” which was played during the Newlyn Riots. May Day celebrations are discussed, accompanied by loud blasts on copper and tin horns.
