Mentoring a refugee

Many of the difficulties which refugees face when they arrive in this country could be solved with some guidance and advice from someone who knows their way around all the red tape and winding streets.

In 2002 a Government White paper recommended the use of mentoring and several schemes were set up in response. The Time Together project (from TimeBank) matched volunteers from the local community with refugees who have fled war or persecution in homeland.

In this piece Faduma, a refugee from Somalia, and her mentor Michael meet up in a buzzing Somalian restaurant in London – they discuss the project and the effect it has had on both their lives.

What lengths would you go to if you found out that your neighbours were being threatened with deportation? All over the country, communities are organising themselves to stop their friends and neighbours being deported.

Rachel Stevenson and Harriet Grant are both journalists – they met up with some of the people involved. In this interview for Refugee Week Radio they talk about what they found and about their film ‘The Resistance: On The Deportation Frontline’ (GuardianFilms).
