<itunes:summary>At the end of October I went to the USA to stay with my good American friends, Bill and Barbara Moreau. They live in a city called Holland in the state of Michigan. I met them fifteen years ago, when they and their 3 children came to live in Campsea Ashe for a year, exchanging their life and homes with the family here in Campsea Ashe.

Bill taught at Farlingaye High School where their two eldest children, Laura and Stephen also attended, whilst their youngest daughter, Jenny, went to Eyke Primary School. Barbara helped out at Eyke School and also shared her quilting skills with local people at Quilter’s Haven.
Every other year since their time here, Bill has organised student exchange trips between the pupils of Farlingaye High School and Hamilton High School in Michigan. Some 150 students have since taken part in this exchange trip – proving to be a wonderful opportunity for young people to experience life both here and in the States, and certainly I know that Bill, on behalf of Hamilton High School, is extremely grateful to the Headmistress of Farlingaye High School, Ms Hardigan, for for her ongoing support for these exchange trips.

I had a wonderful time and I dedicate this programme to all those people in Holland who welcomed me so warmly.

But most of all I dedicate this to Bill.

He knows why. Thank you Bill.

Why I decided to do ‘Beguiling, Begettting and Begot’
The show you are listening to tonight has its roots in events some fourteen years ago when our son, Martin, went to India for part of his ‘gap’ year before university. Martin wanted to work with Tibetan refugees, and found a placement as a teacher in India, in a small town called Kalimpong in the Himalayan foothills. While he was there he made many local friends, and also came to realise how a simple act of sponsorship could help individual young people to gain a valuable education. As a consequence of this a number of members of St Thomas’ Catholic Church in Woodbridge began to sponsor children in Kalimpong.

Eventually Praveena, one of Martin’s young friends in Kalimpong, herself qualified as a teacher and realised the even more could be done by enabling some of the poorest local children to have basic nursery schooling. With further sponsorship from Woodbridge she started her own small school in her family house for some of these children – providing them with books, meals, desks, a teacher and a classroom assistant and a rich structured educational environment that their families could not afford.

Last year Angie and I decided to follow in our children’s footsteps and visit some of the parts of India that our sons have seen. One of those places was Kalimpong. There we received an astonishingly warm welcome as representatives of the many people who have helped youngsters there, and we were both charmed and deeply moved by the work that Praveena was doing for her less fortunate neighbours.

I promised Praveena that on my return I would make a ‘grand gesture’ to help her to fully establish the second class that she was so keen to start in a second room in her house. Somehow from there, and a conversation with Dee about maybe doing a poetry reading for charity, we have reached tonight……

Please be reassured that your contribution to tonight’s entertainment, whether that has been in time, skills or in money, will give even more enjoyment and benefit to a great many young people in Kalimpong.

	A thank you
In addition to the eight singers and readers who have given up time and energy to prepare this show, there are at least another twenty or thirty people who have kindly volunteered time, skills, or resources to make the performance successful.

A number of people have been extremely generous with raffle prizes and donations. The catering arrangements have benefited from outside resources and advice as well as some very professional organisation ‘in house’ and a discount from the caterer. It has been a huge relief to have somebody arrange for the appropriate drinks and performing licenses, to help with fetching and carrying and generally ensuring that the Burness Parish Rooms are a welcoming place. Others have offered the kind of services which can cumulatively transform an event into something rather special – parking wardens, organizing the raffle, shifting furniture, advising on flowers, lending staging and screens, tablecloths and much else. And there are still others who simply said ’I am available for help of any kind – just ask.’ (If you are one of those, and you are reading this, I say: ’Would you mind helping to put away the tables, chairs and rostra?’)

And, of course, all that effort would be wasted without you – the audience – who bought tickets on trust, and gave up a comfortable Sunday evening at home.

If the show is a success it is due to all these people. If it is a failure I am happy to apologise with the same sincerity as the modern banker and politician – and you will find me cycling swiftly into the sunset up Melton Hill.
