Life for a Young Lawyer

23-06-10 by

Tina talks to some young lawyers at Barket Gotelee to find out what made them choose the law as a career.

Except when I needed professional advice I have never had the chance to speak to a solicitor, so I grabbed the chance of an interview with some young lawyers at Barker Gotelee of Martlesham Heath to find out about what they do and what made them choose the law as a career. I was amazed at the variety of work on offer and that different work can suit people with different personalities. The academic work for a student is hard but once training is complete it sounds like there is work to suit a variety of interests and that there is never a dull moment

Pudding in a tutu - Recipe Book

01-06-10 by

Tina talks to Jacki and others at the launcch of her new recipe book – “Pudding in a Tutu”.

Closure of Barn Café Leads to Pudding in a Tutu

After nearly a decade and a half of serving a loyal clientele with inspirational and quirky food the Butley Barn Café has closed its doors. Since the whole Butley Barn complex is up for sale the Café is unlikely to re-open, even in a new incarnation. If this were a possibility, the cook at the Barn Café, Jacki Smith, who has stamped the eating place with an ethos and character all of her own, will not be there. She has called time on an enterprise which she has given heart and soul to for these last fourteen years.

The Barn Café has been known both locally and nationally for its individual approach to food that drew on influences from around the globe, as well as its ability to offer a warm and very personal welcome to passers by, family parties, business lunches, evening soirées and even bands of roaming cyclists.

It is with reluctance that Jacki has closed the door to the Café but she has not yet hung up her apron. She intends to continue cooking, just as she intends to continue breathing! She now plans a roaming style to providing food, for people at events or in their own homes, as well as cooking for the Farmers’ Market in Woodbridge on alternate Saturdays.

However, in the months preceding the closure of the Barn Café the idea of recording some of the recipes of the food served there began to take shape.

It had previously seemed an impossible task to record dishes that regularly reincarnated themselves according to the season and the mood of the cook. Except for specific requests, dishes at the Barn Café often evolved on the wave of a glut of local seasonal produce. Buckets of root vegetables in the autumn would be harvested for a warming Tagine, while an abundance of aubergines and peppers in the summer months would find their way into creating a tasty Caponata—- not forgetting, of course, timely tip-offs from the local butcher. When friend and writer, Elizabeth Murphy, suggested that capturing in print this fast-changing world of creative cooking might be achievable with a fly-on-the-wall approach, and volunteered to be the fly, Jacki bravely agreed to give it a go.

Twelve months on the slim volume, Pudding in a Tutu Recipes and tales from a Suffolk Barn Café, is complete and was launched on 20th May to a gathering of about xxx people in the Shire Hall in Woodbridge. The book tells the story of Jacki at the helm of the Barn Café, interspersed with original drawings and over fifty recipes; recipes that capture some of the most popular dishes at the Barn Café; recipes which combine unusual and unexpected ingredients from a battery of flavours and spices both savoury and sweet. The book includes, of course, the dessert of the title. Pudding in a Tutu will be available for £7.99 from Woodbridge Books and other local Suffolk bookshops, some farm shops, from Jacki at Woodbridge Farmers’ Market or by emailing puddinginatutu@yahoo.com
