Eric Houlder reminisces about his work at Sutton Hoo in the 1960s

06-06-09 by

Rosemary of Deben Radio asks Eric how he got involved in archaeological photography and what were his impressions on coming to Suffolk to work on the most significant archaeologcal site in the country. He likens it to ‘winning the pools’ being able to work with the likes of Dr Rupert Bruce Mitford and Angela Evans, and meet with Charles Phillips and Basil Brown. He also remembers fellow excavators Peter Rooley and John Samuels. He spent about 3 seasons here between 1966 and 1969 and has abiding memories staying in a camp site behind the Wood Hall hotel and visiting the Sorrell Horse in Shottisham where the only tune on the juke box was ‘The Carnival is Over’ by the Seekers.

Eric was back in Suffolk to present a Day School entitled ‘Picturing the Past – Photography and Archaeology’ as part of the Wuffing Education series of lectures on Medieval topics at Sutton Hoo. Eric Houlder LRPS, MIfL, has been photographing archaeology since 1957, from the days of glass plates to digital imaging. Through what he describes as a series of accidents he has been fortunate to meet and sometimes work with many of the great British archaeologists of the past half century. From one of Dr Bruce-Mitford & Paul Ashbee’s supervisors on the ‘60s dig at Sutton Hoo, to his retirement as Site Photographer to the Wood Hall Archaeological Trust, via flying with Derrick Riley during the hot summers of the ‘70s, and photographing the Towton Wars of the Roses Battlefield skeletons, his work has been at the forefront of archaeological imaging. An accomplished speaker, he now travels throughout the country such is the demand for his illustrated talks.
