Asiana - A Refuge for helps people trapped in forced marriages

Over the past few months the problem of Forced Marriage and so called Honour-based violence has been in the headlines, not least with the tragic murder of a north London teenager. In December 2009 Mehmet Goran was jailed for the murder of his 15 year old daughter Tulay in an “honour” killing.

East London based Ashiana are a domestic violence support project that has helped many people across the capital, mainly women, escape the trap of forced marriage. They have also recently set up a new refuge. Ben Cooper went to their offices in Leytonstone and spoke to director Shaminder Ubhi.

This is an Exclusive Interview with the one and only Jesse Johnson, the ‘greatest guitarist alive’ who is shortly to play the Jazz Cafe in Camden Town. Jesse talks with lucky Wayne Boucaud, of Camden Community Radio, about his new album ‘Verbal Penetration’.
Jesse’s music is informed by his sense of the interconnectedness between people that dates from a childhood spent close to people active in the Black liberation movements in the USA and South Africa. He talks here about the difficulty of recording albums such as his ‘Black in America’ which some record companies see as a minority interest and how this led him to talk the path he has. UNMISSABLE!!

Award Winning Eco-Councillor Alexis Rowell talks to CC Radiio

In February 2010, the Local Government information Unit presented Camden Councillor Alexis Rowell the Sustainability Councillor of the Year Award.

Representing Belsize ward, Cllr Rowell has been dubbed the Eco-Councillor for setting up and chairing Camden Council’s Sustainability task force, establishing community environmental group Transition Belsize, running consultancy Cut the Carbon, and playing a key role locally as a co-ordinator in the 10:10 campaign.

In this interview the Liberal Democrat talks to Ben Cooper about his work in the community, the reality of climate change and peak oil, why he doesn’t really believe in political parties and his love of Camden.

The council joined forces with the charity TRAID (Textile Recycling for Aid and International Development) to demonstrate how clothes can be reused.

Marian Larragy talks with Sasha Laurel and Saif Osmani of Friend’s of Queen’s Market in Newham, which mobilised thousands of local people to win a fight to keep this local market in Newham. Like other local London markets, Queen’s Market has been threatened by a large developments that regard street markets as a thing of the past. The draft London Plan, which frames spatial policy is out for consultation till 12th January.
